A123 Systems Grows Grid Strategy

January 20, 2012

On 23 December 2011, A123 Systems, Inc. announced that it had been chosen as the battery supplier for Sempra Generation's Auwahi wind project in Maui, Hawaii, which has a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Maui Electric Company (MECO). A123 will supply an 11 MW/2.75 MWh Grid Battery System (GBS) for the 21 MW wind project, providing smoothing services. The project caps a string of grid project announcements by A123 in Q4 2011, adding to its pipeline a 1 MW system with MECO as well as a 2 MW project with NStar in Medway, Massachusetts. Key trends in this On Point include:

  • A123 increases focus on grid storage.
  • Recent announcements broaden A123's power sector position.
  • Angamos project highlights spinning reserve applications for energy storage.
