Developers Pair Solar and Wind to Maximize Renewable Opportunities

February 24, 2012

On 31 January 2012, renewable developer enXco announced that it had begun construction of its 130 MW Catalina solar PV project in Kern County, California. The project will be adjacent to enXco's 140 MW Pacific Wind wind project. The first 60 MW of Catalina and the entire Pacific Wind project are expected online by the end of 2012. The remaining 50 MW of Catalina will be completed by mid-2013. Sharing the same generation tie to the newly completely Whirlwind substation, the project will be the largest integrated wind-solar plant in the Americas. Key trends in this On Point include:

  • Developers explore hybrid option as remedy for renewables integration issues.
  • Co-location offers moderate potential for development cost reduction.
  • GE positioned to be key supplier in niche hybrid renewables market.
