Dutch Renewables Falters with New SDE+ Policy

August 8, 2011

On 1 July 2011, the Netherlands Energy Agency NL Agency opened a tender for renewable generation capacity applications under the Subsidieregeling Duurzame Energie (SDE+) 2011 scheme, with €1.5 billion allocated. The SDE+, which replaces its predecessor the SDE, is a feed-in premium mechanism whereby a maximum subsidy level is set and renewable producers receive the difference between this subsidy and the wholesale power price. Key trends in this On Point include:

  • SDE+ scheme unable to deliver long-term renewables goal.
  • Industry lobbies for biomass co-firing supplier obligation.
  • Lights out for offshore wind under SDE+.
