Cost Competition Drives Developers to Tracking Technology in the Southwest US

June 5, 2012

On 3 May 2012, Duke Energy Renewables announced the purchase of a 10 MW single-axis tracker photovoltaic (PV) system under development in Arizona, US. This project is one of over 160 MW of single-axis tracker PV systems installed or under development in Arizona since 2011. Ninety percent of single-axis tracking projects are located in the US Southwest. Key trends in this On Point include:

  • Tracking differentiates utility-scale PV players from fixed-tilt solutions.
  • Trackers augment the US Southwest's solar resource advantage.
  • Uncertainty over long-term O&M costs casts shadow on tracking advantage.
  • Cost advantage reduced in lower-resource areas.
