Falling SREC Prices Signal New Jersey Solar Glut

September 6, 2011

On 18 August 2011, Lincoln Renewable Energy announced that its 10 MW Oak Solar project would be supplied with panels by Yingli Solar. Oak Solar, located in Fairfield Township, New Jersey, is currently under construction and is expected to come online by Q4 2011. Quanta Services is providing engineering, procurement, and construction for the project. On 27 April 2011, Lincoln Renewable Energy signed a US$41 million project financing agreement with Macquarie Energy for the Oak Solar project. Macquarie will buy the power and the Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SREC) purchase agreement from Lincoln Renewable Energy. Key trends in this On Point include:

  • SREC price dip sparked by oversupply.
  • Utility-scale development stops before it starts.
  • Uncertainty challenges solar developers in New Jersey.
