On 20 July 2011, Solar Frontier announced that it had begun shipping the first 150 watt cadmium indium selenium (CIS) panels from its newly completed 900 MW Kunitomi factory in Miyazaki, Japan. The US$1 billion module production plant officially opened on 20 April 2011 and is one of the largest thin film manufacturing plants in the world. It will produce Solar Frontier's 12.2% efficiency thin film panels, adding to the company's 80 MW of existing capacity located in Miyazaki. Key trends in this On Point include:

  • Solar Frontier builds bridges to key markets.
  • Solar Frontier rises in thin film rankings.
  • Thin film investments continue despite rocky road ahead.
