Asian OEMs Gaining Entry Points into Europe

August 26, 2011

On 15 August 2011, China's XEMC VWEC (XEMC) secured a supply agreement with Irish developer Gaelectric for roughly 13.6 MW of wind turbine capacity. The deal encompasses installation of XV90 direct-drive technology at up to three Ireland-based onshore sites, with an additional option to co-develop portions of Gaelectric's local pipeline and a pilot turbine in the Irish Sea. This follows successful onshore installation of the vendor's 5 MW offshore wind turbine prototype in the Netherlands in June 2011. Key trends in this On Point include:

  • Asian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) previously drawn to niche markets for first European deliveries.
  • Deals in crisis-stricken European markets reveal new entry points.
  • European offshore sector offers large-scale opportunities for Asian OEMs.
