US High-Voltage Transmission: The Next Wave of Investment

February 22, 2012

IHS EER has profiled 33 proposals and initiatives for a combined US$75 billion in potential investment that represent the key lines under development intended to unlock renewable energy. This total identified pipeline of high-voltage transmission projects represents a potential investment of approximately US$139 billion, with these initiatives at varying stages of development. Key trends in this Market Brief include:

  • Nearly every transmission project identified in the US pipeline would facilitate at least some renewable energy.
  • Investment in high-voltage transmission lines can vary significantly, with most projects expected to add between US$10/MWh to US$30/MWh to the price of delivered power.
  • Challenging siting and permitting requirements and concentrated coastal load have helped make underground and underwater transmission attractive.
