Hot Rock Enhances Global Geothermal Outlook

With the promise of delivering renewable baseload power that can be deployed at nearly any location, “hot rock” geothermal energy, also known as enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), has the potential to inject new life in the geothermal industry. A flurry of investment activity over the last two months—centered around EGS start-ups in Australia—indicates building momentum for this largely experimental technology. While proven on a small scale, it remains to be seen if adequate permeability can be achieved for large-scale, utility-grade commercial deployment.
